A recent InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion poll found almost 4 in 10 American's favor impeachment of President Bush. Other polling indicates a great deal of public dissatisfaction with the War in Iraq, but we have rarely seen any clarification of that public opposition. In a strange twist of fate, Bush has managed to raise the ire of Liberals and Conservatives alike such that neither side is satisfied with his performance in Iraq.
Many pundits and the pollsters wrongly ascribe these results to a general "anti-war" sentiment. That is far from what I believe is actually the case. Many Americans and most conservatives are disappointed in the President's performance in Iraq, but not because we think the war is immoral, based on a lie, or other such MSM and Democrat non-sense.
Americans are sorely disappointed in the way this war is being conducted, its methods, and the failure of this administration to relate the strategic importance of this nation building effort. The news business features headlines, and thus ignore our early huge success and now focus on the terrible reality (and visuals) of the terrorist IED campaign.
Our troops are more than willing to make the required sacrifices, yet they are hamstrung with ridiculous ROE that only increases our casualties and plays into al'Qaida's hands. Our troops also understand the importance of what they are doing, this despite Rosie and Kerry telling us they are just a bunch of uneducated miscreants.
The average American is more concerned about his own schools than he is with those in Baghdad. It is U.S. infrastructure he wants rebuilt, not that in the Sunni triangle. Truth be told, most American's don't understand the strategic import of the region and President Bush's administration is largely to blame for that ignorance. We don't really care about the Muslim Mosques used to hide arms caches, but we do care about our men and women in uniform dying to save the sensibilities of a religiously motivated enemy sworn to destroy or enslave us.
After 9/11 most American's understood and agreed that we needed to do something with the "Axis of Evil"...but President Bush wasted that political capital. He absolutely flabbergasted conservatives when he sent Secretary Rice to stop the Israeli Army from destroying Hezbollah! He has confused us by sending tens of millions in aid to the killers of the Beirut Marines and the murderers of tens of thousands of Jewish men, women, and children! We cannot comprehend his de facto open border policy that overwhelms our social safety net, imprisons our law enforcement, enriches drug dealers, and threatens our national security!
Not only that, but Bush's advisors have utterly failed to understand the Democrats mindset. To them this is not about winning or losing this war, it's more about winning or losing power. The Democrats rightly believe there is no way the U.S. will ever "lose". . . at least not in the long run. Both sides of the aisle know that America cannot be defeated by mere terrorism.
But our enemies are fully aware of the power of the media and the role of willing leftwing stooges in our Vietnam defeat. They hope to repeat that successful strategy of divide and conquer, and sadly it appears to be working once again. While many on the left cynically accuse Bush of sending the troops to "die for a lie", in fact it is they who encourage the enemy and prolong this battle to their political advantage. That is the sickening truth of today's Washington. We deserve better from our leaders.
